1927-1940, mostly later vintage enlargements by the artist A set of photographs with social subject matter. The set contains: Untitled (carrying water), 23.7x28.7 cm, Agfa-Brovira paper, verso the artist's name "O. Straka", a note in pencil "O štědrém dnu ve Strání" (On Christmas Eve in Strání). A further 28 photographs, dimensions ranging from 22.6x17.6 cm to 29.7x42.5 cm, later enlargements by the artist. Nine of them were published in the magazine Československá fotografie, volume XXIX, August 1978, issue no. 8. The original enlargement has verso traces of mounting on the edges, a crease in the upper left corner. The three largest photographs are damaged, the rest are well preserved or slightly damaged. Oldřich Straka was among the notable photographers of the interwar period. He was self-taught, but already in the 1930s established himself as a photojournalist for the magazines Světozor, Pestrý týden, Svět práce, Pražský ilustrovaný zpravodaj and Ahoj. During the economic crisis he focused chiefly on social subjects - capturing the lives of people from the Prague periphery, the homeless, the poor, and the rural population. Between 1938 and 1945 he worked in Zlín in the advertising department of the Baťa company; after the war he became a member of the Union of Czechoslovak Visual Artists and also devoted himself to colour photography. Straka's work, including his social photographs from the 1930s, is today represented chiefly in the collections of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague and the Moravian Gallery in Brno.
