Trained as a lathe operator, he studied at the Secondary Technical School in Brno and at FAMU in Prague. From 1986 he taught photography at the Secondary School of Applied Arts (SUPŠ) in Brno. A member of the group Epos (Maršálek, Sikula, Košťál, Horák). In the 1960s he was among the leading representatives of the new wave of staged photography in our country, which found a response above all in the work of amateurs and later of Slovak students at FAMU in Prague. He drew themes and moods for his photographs from many sources, especially romanticism, symbolism, expressionism and surrealism. He pursued an existential intent, the motif of fear, alienation and interpersonal relationships. From the 1980s he dealt mainly, in interior shots, with the issue of light and shadow. His work retains a philosophical and meditative character.
