• In 2025 she is nominated for the ELLE Decoration International Awards in the Home Accessories category and as a Young Talent, and she is one of the finalists of the Czech Grand Design Awards in the Discovery of the Year category for 2024.

Karolína Kučerová has taken an unusual path as an artist. She was born in America, moved to Bohemia at the age of 22, and four years later, on a ceramics course, decided that instead of a corporate job she needed to make things. She applied to the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague to study ceramics and porcelain, and from there set off on study trips to Jerusalem and Kyoto. A six-month residency in Japan greatly enriched her approach to life and to her work. "My time in Japan was a turning point in my artistic direction – I allowed myself to go further than the ‘perfect’ shapes of functional ceramics and to cross my own boundaries. I think we often let ourselves be bound by established ways of thinking and perceiving, and it is art that gives me the space to reflect on my inner development and to share the mysterious depth of human existence," the artist explains.

Drawing on that experience, Karolína’s work opens up the question of truth and its subjectivity, on both a theoretical and a material level. In the ENIGMA, EMPATHY and ESSENCE collections she deliberately plays with the illusion that the defining qualities of familiar materials have changed. "I am fascinated by haptic perception and by the emotional quality of surfaces. I look for ways to manipulate a material so that it appears, at times almost surreally, to be something it is not," says Karolína. In doing so she calls into question the viewer’s most basic assumptions about materials they think they know. Can ceramics look like a jelly sweet and glass like smoke, or even stay liquid?  "A key element of my work is achieving an impression of softness in a hard material, through sprayed textures, manipulation of the material and adjustments to form. I believe my work acts as a mirror: it reflects my thoughts and emotions and carries a certain energy within it. Each viewer then interacts with the object subjectively. Jung’s concept of active imagination is one of the main principles I follow both in life and in my work."

Karolína Kučerová is one of the notable figures of Czech design in recent years. In 2020 she joined the Ceramics and Porcelain studio at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, and in 2023 she took a placement in glass. During her studies she completed creative residencies at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem and at Kyoto University of the Arts in Kyoto.
