Tomáš Černý studied sculpture with a specialisation in ceramics at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art, University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, where in 2021 he defended his diploma project Into the rabbit hole. Recent years include an exhibition at the Museum of Art and Design in Benešov and appearances at Křehký Mikulov and Designblok.

Tomáš Černý’s figurative vessels, miniatures and formal games grow out of an intuitive critique of settled ideas about the shapes of objects and the purposes we routinely attach to them. Out of these shapes he assembles communities, colonies of objects. He has full command of the techniques needed for perfectly repeatable work in his chosen material.  Yet even as he aims for a carefully planned process, his encounters with chance and his wonder at the unrepeatability of these processes often lead him to look for new limit situations. There the materials transform outside their expected course and reveal their hidden properties. In this way the artist repeatedly observes the singularity of things, which thereby acquire an identity of their own, mirroring both human culture and chance events.

In planning and making his work he combines digital and analogue methods. He uses 3D modelling and printed prototypes to achieve complex geometries and to test the resilience of the materials he chooses. Hand finishing and detailing ensure that every piece is unique. His work often explores the joining of different materials, such as porcelain and metal. These experiments give his pieces a distinctive look and character.
