About

Adrian Altman is one of the progressive makers of the young Czech art scene. In order to gather as broad a range of experience and feedback as possible, between 2015 and 2021 he passed through many studios at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, FAMU, the Faculty of Fine Arts, Brno University of Technology and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. From 2019 to 2023 he also completed a wide variety of artist placements and residencies in Tokyo, Vienna, Leipzig, Barcelona, Dresden, Budapest and Český Krumlov, and in 2019 he became a finalist of the EXIT Award. Since 2017 he has been exhibiting actively at established Czech and international institutions and his work has entered many private art collections. Among his significant solo projects, special mention goes to the shows at Holešovická Šachta and Pragovka Gallery in Prague, at FOC in Barcelona, at Atelierhaus Klingental in Basel and at the Regional Gallery in Liberec. Finally, one cannot leave out his remarkable performance and site-specific project staged within the TV show Prostřeno.

Adrian Altman's work has always stood slightly apart. In his performative and site-specific pieces he disrupted settled patterns and ties, using a subtle kind of revolt to open up different points of view. Much of this distinctive handwriting and thinking has found its way into his intuitive, immediate paintings as well. Out of pure abstraction, more concrete outlines and more expressive motifs slowly began to crystallise on his canvases, yet the emotional dynamics and the contrast between raw energy and precise craft remained unchanged. Adrian draws on the world around him, and his works build his own analogy to the emotions and relationships of contemporary society. He experiments not only with technique and materials but also with presentation, moving from unstretched, bare canvases and oil paint towards various do-it-yourself methods that he combines with traditional craft procedures. Adrian Altman's paintings move along the very thin line between figuration and abstraction, carry a wealth of small hidden motifs and lead the viewer to keep discovering new meanings.
