About

Barbora Šaroun Šemberová studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in the painting studio of Professor Michael Rittstein, graduating in the autumn of 2021 under Josef Bolf and Jakub Hošek. In 2015 she received a bachelor's degree from the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art in Pilsen, in the Illustration and Book Design programme, which she still pursues in her free time. In 2023 the Meander publishing house brought out Oheň, voda, mraky a jiné živly taky, a book she accompanied with her illustrations. In recent years she has shown in group exhibitions in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Also worth mentioning are her solo shows at the OFF/FORMÁT gallery in Brno, Prostor 39 and Walkthru Gallery in Hradec Králové.

Barbora Šaroun Šemberová works with painting and drawing built on colour and on the search for the effects of its mutual contrasts. She is fascinated by how colour combinations alone can tell a story and stir emotion. Thematically her work grows out of rites of passage and customs tied to natural cycles and folk traditions. After stories, her attention has turned to particular places encountered on her travels, not only through the Czech landscape. "These places give you the feeling that history and eternity are present. Even knowing that most of the forests are not original, they evoke the atmosphere of a community that was here long before me and lives a life of its own. Living beings can then be seen not only in the animals that really live there, but also in the trees, stones, marshes and slopes." the artist says of this body of work.
